From the youngest to the oldest, every member of Hogar Irekani learns responsibilities to use as adults. They are in charge of everyday chores. Each is responsible for his or her own clothes, living space, and school materials. Each learns to take care of and to love the others younger than they. In addition, they are great helpers in the kitchen as they learn cooking skills from Rosie. Responsibilities change from day to day, so each learns all skills necessary to maintain living space as adults.
Older teens may hold part-time jobs outside of Irekani to introduce them to the work world. Some are internships, some are career-related. They learn to budget their earnings to buy clothes and take care of their personal needs.
Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed. (Psalm 82:3 NIV).
Beause we live by faith and depend on God, spiritual belief is the basis of everything in our home. As the children and teens grow, we witness them living their faith more and more. They are becoming more involved in church activities and youth groups. We pray each morning and try everyday to keep close to God’s word and let Him direct our lives. We follow His rules. Through spirituality, some of our youth have overcome their personal traumas and found peace and love. As a group, we attend Mas Vida church every Sunday morning. In addition, the Noe (Noah) Center also works with us to provide support and encouragement through activities, gifts, and their presence. Because of the strong spiritual center in their lives, we have very little fighting within Irekani. We truly live surrounded by peace and in love.
